Private Video Game Programming Lessons by Brian Greenstone

LEARN TO MAKE VIDEO GAMES!

ABOUT ME

Hello and welcome to the exciting world of video game development! My name is Brian Greenstone, and I am the President / CEO and lead programmer at Pangea Software. I have been making video games since 1982, and I have developed dozens of games for the Playstation, Nintendo, Sega, and Macintosh platforms:

I have also written a book on video game programming, "Pangea Software's Ultimate Game Programming Guide for Mac OS X", and have been a contributing author to another book, "Tricks of the Mac Game Programming Guru's". I give each new student a free copy of the "Ultimate Game Programming Guide" at the first lesson.

ABOUT THE PRIVATE LESSONS

The best time to start a career in video game programming is in the 8th-12th grade. Much like any other art form, game programming requires years of experience and practice, so getting an early start means that you'll be first in line to get a job programming video games when you get out of college. Having a bunch of games to show on your resume is a sure-fire way to get a job in this business, so the earlier you start the better.

I teach private lessons at students' homes in the west side of Austin, Texas. I cover the area from Lakeway through Steiner Ranch, and up to the 620/Anderson Mill area.

All skill levels are accepted from beginner to experienced programmers. The tutoring will be customized to each student's skill level and interests. We will start by learning to write simple 2D games, and then as students get more proficient we'll delve into the world of 3D gaming.

The cost for the private lessons is $50 / hour, and I recommend lessons once per week. Students will need to make time during the week to work on their game code, and I am always available by email or phone if students have questions.

Students must own an Apple Macintosh computer running Mac OS 10.3.9 or later. Apple provides all of their development tools for free, so learning on the Mac is not only easier but also less expensive than other platforms, therefore, the Mac is the only platform that I offer lessons for.

In addition to owning a Mac, students will also need some additional resources such as a copy of Photoshop (or something equivalent), several programming reference books, and possibly other utilities such as 3D modeling software. I can give you more specifics on this when we speak.
